E-card or paper card? An honest comparison for 2026

7 November 2026 · 5 min read

Quick answer

Choose a paper card when you can post it in good time and they love something to put on the mantelpiece. Choose an e-card when time is short, they live abroad, or you want them to hear your voice and see photos. Many people send both: a paper card for the shelf, and an e-card on the day.

The short answer

Neither is better in every case. A paper card is a lovely object. An e-card is quicker, travels anywhere instantly, and can carry things paper can't, like your voice.

How they compare

Abroad Can take a week or more Instant, on any phone
Your voice No Yes, up to 60 seconds
Photos Only if you print them Up to six, with captions
Messages from family Everyone has to sign it in person Add a line from each person
On the mantelpiece Yes No, but they can replay it any time

When a paper card is the right choice

  • They're close by, and you can post it in time.
  • They love displaying cards, and a physical card will mean a lot.
  • It's a formal occasion, such as a sympathy card or a wedding.

When an e-card is the right choice

  • You've missed the last posting date. You can make one tonight and send it in the morning.
  • They live abroad. A link arrives as fast as a WhatsApp message, wherever they are.
  • You can't be there. Hearing your voice is the next best thing to being in the room.
  • The whole family wants to join in but lives in different places.

Do people think e-cards are lazy?

A plain "Happy birthday!" text can feel that way. An e-card with your own voice, your own photos and a line from everyone usually lands the other way: it takes a few minutes of real thought, and it shows. Read more in are e-cards still a thing?
